How to Brush Your Teeth...Properly

Wondering how to brush your teeth properly? Brushing your teeth is essential in preserving excellent oral hygiene. Tooth brushing removes the microorganisms that promote dental caries and plaque that may trigger bleeding gums and periodontal disease.

You may already clean your teeth twice each day, but do you know the proper tooth brushing technique to do it most effectively? Beachside Dental knows the best tips and tricks when it comes to tooth brushing – and we’re going to share them with you!

Here are the steps for the ‘Modified Bass Technique’ that we recommend:

  1. Apply a pea sized amount of toothpaste on your soft bristle toothbrush
  2. Place the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gum line. The bristles must contact both the tooth and gum.
  3. Move the toothbrush using a gentle circular motion
  4. Brush each tooth well and when finished, flick the toothbrush down the tooth, away from the gumline
  5. Brush all your teeth and surfaces in this way, including the outside, inside and chewing surfaces of your teeth
  6. Gently brush your tongue with a circular brushing movement
  7. Spit your toothpaste out, and don’t rinse

Brushing your teeth should take two to three minutes to complete and is recommended to brush your teeth twice a day, morning, and night. Your dental professional may recommend you brush your teeth more regularly depending on your oral health.

The Australian Dental Association (ADA) says that when it comes to tooth brushing – it is best to use “a soft-bristled toothbrush with a small head and a flexible neck because this will most effectively remove plaque and debris from your teeth, without damaging your teeth and gums and drawing blood.” Follow this link to find out more:
